To be able to use it at the same time as your existing audio interface, you need to create what’s called an Aggregate Device. To your Mac, Soundflower is just an audio interface like any other.

A download link for the latest build (today 2.0b2) and install instructions are available on the Soundflower’s GitHub page.

Soundflower is a free app that acts like virtual audio cables between audio programs on your Mac. It’s a free, open-source virtual modular synthesizer, and works great to use in combination with Reason. The process is similar for Windows, using other apps.Īs the other program we will use VCV Rack.

This tutorial will show how to do this on a Mac using an app called Soundflower.

With the new CV-I/O devices, it is possible to send Reason CV signals as audio to and from your external synthesizer, but also to other programs in your computer. Does anyone know how to force this to mono?Doh! Figured it out - I just needed to create two audio tracks for each stereo pair and pan hard left / right.Connecting Reason to VCV Rack with Soundflower But within the Ableton audio channel strip, there is no way to select a single output from VCV Rack they are only presented as stereo pairs. I've setup a simple project in Ableton where I'm routing two LFOs to my ES-9 on channels 9 and 10. The images below depict what I'm talking about.

Is there anyway to force an audio channel in Ableton to mono (or some way within VCV to do this) so I can get eight full channels of CV out? I've got that working, but with one major caveat - I can only send CV out from VCV Rack as stereo pairs, so rather than having eight CV outs I'm limited to four, unless I sum two channels together. I'm hoping to use my Expert Sleepers ES-9 audio interface to route CV back and forth from my external modular gear to VCV Rack. I've partially figured out my CV routing issues using VCV Rack as a VST, but am still having one major issue. Does anyone know of any good reference materials for getting this setup / working? I looked on the VCV website for updated documentation, but there wasn't anything I could find about CV routing within the DAW. I'm using an Expert Sleepers ES-9 as my audio interface. I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it in Ableton with the new VST. Using the stand-alone 1.16 version of VCV Rack, it was trivially easy to route CV back and forth between VCV and Ableton. Definitely weird!Īs a separate issue, I finally got around to using the VST in Ableton to interface with my physical modular gear, but have been beating my head against a wall trying to understand the audio routing of the new DAW driver.

On my Windows machine, it left both side-by-side. On my Macbook, I only ever installed V2 but it would be silly if they designed it to work entirely differently on Mac.Yeah on my Mac it automatically upgraded version 1.16 to 2 when I installed. I can confirm that's how it works on Windows. I think the application itself also gets installed to separate directories and has different names "VCV Rack" versus "VCV Rack 2 Pro" for example.

You should have a Documents\Rack path with your Rack 1 resources, and a Documents\Rack2 with your Rack v2 plugins and resources. I think by default, it attempts to allow both to live side by side. On my Macbook, I only ever installed V2 but it would be silly if they designed it to work entirely differently on Mac. Then reinstalling Rack 2 and checking to see that the application gets installed into a different path. I'd suggest digging up a 1.x installer and paying extra attention to where it gets installed. I wouldn't much care if there weren't some modules (mainly from Erica Synths) that I use regularly that haven't been ported yet. That's weird. I don't see a way from the main website to reinstall it only 2 is on there now. How did you do this? I installed on my secondary computer (Macbook Air laptop) and it overwrote my 1.16 install.
